Home/ Trip Cost Guide

What Does a Habituation Trip Really Cost?

The permit is only one line item. Here’s the full, honest breakdown — flights, lodging, visa, insurance and tips included — so the total doesn’t surprise you later.

i The Six Line Items

1. Habituation Permit

  • Per person, indicative~$1,500

Set by the Uganda Wildlife Authority, not by us — every operator pays the same rate. Compare with a standard trekking permit at roughly $800.

2. International Flights

  • Return, US/Europe to Entebbe$900–$1,800

Varies heavily by origin city, season and how far ahead you book. Not included in any package price on this site.

3. Domestic Transfers

  • Road transfer, Entebbe–BwindiIncluded
  • Optional light-aircraft flight+$300–$450 pp

Every package includes ground transfers as standard; flying saves roughly a day of driving each way.

4. Accommodation

  • Budget, per person/night$80–$150
  • Mid-range, per person/night$200–$400
  • Luxury, per person/night$450–$900+

Already built into every package price on this site — this is just so you know what tier you’re booking.

5. Visa & Insurance

  • Uganda e-visa / East Africa Visa~$50–$100
  • Travel & medical insurance~$60–$180

See our Uganda Visa Guide for the current application process.

6. Porters & Tips

  • Porter, per trek day~$20–$25
  • Guide tip, per day~$15–$20
  • Driver tip, per day~$10–$15

Cash, in US dollars or Ugandan shillings. Budget roughly $50–$70 per trekking day in tips if you’re using a porter.

i Where You Can Actually Save

Fly Into the Right Season

Shoulder months (March, November) often price flights lower than peak June–September while forest conditions are still workable.

Choose Standard Trekking Instead

If four hours of observation isn’t the priority, a standard trekking permit at roughly $800 versus $1,500 covers the same gorilla families.

Book Lodging Mid-Range, Not Luxury

Mid-range lodges near Rushaga and Buhoma are a short drive from the trailhead and cut $200–$500 per night versus luxury camps.

Share a Porter’s Cost, Not the Porter

Hire one porter per person rather than skipping this line entirely — injuries from unaided climbs cost far more than the $20–$25 daily fee.
