Trip Overview
In short: Drive from Entebbe to Rushaga, do the Gorilla Habituation Experience, rest at Lake Bunyonyi and drive back to Entebbe. The most affordable way to do habituation from Uganda’s main airport.
The 4-day gorilla habituation safari is the classic short format for travellers flying into Entebbe. It keeps costs down by travelling by road, and it splits the return journey with a night on Lake Bunyonyi so you are not facing a full day in the car straight after the trek.
The road to Rushaga takes 8 to 10 hours with stops, through the equator, Mbarara and the terraced hills of Kigezi. It is long but scenic, and your private vehicle and driver-guide stay with you for the whole trip.
If you would rather not drive both ways, our 4-Day Fly-In Gorilla Habituation Safari follows the same idea with flights to Kisoro.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1Entebbe to Rushaga
We leave Entebbe early. You cross the equator at Kayabwe, stop for lunch in Mbarara and pass the long-horned Ankole cattle before climbing into the hills of Kigezi around Kabale. The last stretch winds through farmland and bamboo to the edge of Bwindi, and you reach your Rushaga lodge in the late afternoon.
Overnight: Four Gorillas Lodge, Rushaga · Meals: Lunch, dinner
Day 2The Gorilla Habituation Experience
Breakfast at 6:30 am, then the short drive to the Rushaga park office for registration and a Uganda Wildlife Authority briefing. You head into the forest with the trackers and researchers, often off-trail, to the family’s location. You then spend up to four hours with the gorillas while the team records behaviour around you.
Back at the park office you collect your certificate and return to the lodge for a hot shower and dinner.
Overnight: Four Gorillas Lodge, Rushaga · Meals: Breakfast, packed lunch, dinner
Day 3Rushaga to Lake Bunyonyi
A later start and a short drive to Lake Bunyonyi, a deep lake scattered with islands and ringed by terraced hills. Spend the afternoon on a canoe or boat trip among the islands, or simply rest on the terrace.
Overnight: Birdnest Resort, Lake Bunyonyi · Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
Day 4Lake Bunyonyi to Entebbe
After breakfast you drive back to Entebbe, arriving in the evening in time for late-night international departures.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch
