Ruhija Sector

Bwindi’s highest, coolest sector — a favorite with birders as well as gorilla trekkers, with some of the park’s most dramatic views.

Overview

Ruhija sits along Bwindi’s eastern ridge at roughly 2,300 metres, making it noticeably cooler than the other three sectors — pack a warm layer for early mornings. The altitude brings a trade-off: some of the steepest single climbs in the park, but also panoramic views across the Albertine Rift that the lower sectors can’t match.

It’s less developed than Buhoma, with fewer lodges, which keeps it quieter even in high season.

Birding & the Mubwindi Swamp Trail

Ruhija borders the Mubwindi Swamp, one of the best birding sites in Uganda and a reliable spot for the elusive African green broadbill, alongside a long list of other Albertine Rift endemics.

The Institute of Tropical Forest Conservation is also based here, running long-term research on the park’s gorillas and other wildlife — worth a stop if you’re curious about the science behind habituation.

Best Time to Visit Ruhija

Ruhija’s altitude means cooler, often misty mornings year-round, but the dry windows (June–September, December–February) still bring the clearest visibility for both gorilla trekking and birding. Bring warmer layers regardless of season. See our Best Time of Year for Bwindi guide for details.

Getting There

Ruhija is typically reached by road from Buhoma (around 1.5 hours) or as part of a longer overland route through the park. We arrange all transfers as part of every package.
