Bwindi’s original gorilla-trekking sector, in the north of the park — the gentlest terrain, the widest choice of lodges, and the easiest access.
Buhoma is where gorilla tourism in Bwindi began, and it remains the most developed and accessible of the park’s four sectors. It sits in the north, bordering the park’s tallest, densest forest, and hosts Bwindi’s main park headquarters.
Compared with Rushaga or Nkuringo, the trails here are gentler and the walk to park headquarters shorter for most lodges, which makes Buhoma a popular choice for first-time trekkers, families, and travelers prioritizing comfort without giving up genuine wilderness.
Buhoma does not currently offer the Gorilla Habituation Experience — for that, see our Rushaga Sector guide — but it remains one of the most reliable sectors for standard one-hour gorilla trekking.

Buhoma’s visitor infrastructure means there’s more to fill a rest day here than in the other sectors: the Buhoma-Nkuringo waterfall trail, guided nature walks along the park boundary, and community-run cultural walks through nearby Batwa and Bakiga villages.
It’s a natural fit for travelers combining a habituation day in Rushaga with an easier standard trek and a slower few days in Buhoma either side.
Buhoma’s gentler terrain makes it more forgiving in the rainy seasons (March–May, October–November) than the other sectors — a reasonable option if you want easier permit availability without the steepest mud. Most guests fly into Kihihi airstrip, roughly a 2-hour drive from Buhoma, or drive the full route from Entebbe or Kampala (around 8–9 hours). We arrange all transfers as part of every package.
