Nkuringo Sector

The most physically demanding of Bwindi’s four sectors — and, for many guests, the most rewarding views in the park.

Overview

Nkuringo sits on a ridge in the southwest of Bwindi, and getting there involves one of the steepest access roads in the park — a detail that keeps visitor numbers noticeably lower than Buhoma. Treks here tend to start with a steep descent into the forest and end, inevitably, with an equally steep climb back out.

The reward is the view: on a clear day, Nkuringo looks straight across to the Virunga volcanoes on the Rwanda and DR Congo borders, a backdrop few other sectors can offer.

A newer addition to the sector’s trekking roster, still building a track record with visitors.

The Wider Region

Nkuringo sits close to Lake Mutanda, a scenic base for a rest day between forest days, and within reach of Mgahinga Gorilla National Park across the border area — useful if you’re combining Bwindi with golden monkey trekking or a Virunga volcano climb.

Community-run guest houses and cultural walks around Nkuringo village add a slower, more local counterpoint to the trekking days.

Best Time to Visit Nkuringo

Given how demanding Nkuringo already is, the dry seasons (June–September, December–February) are worth prioritizing here more than in any other sector — wet, slick trails add real difficulty to an already steep route. See our Best Time of Year for Bwindi guide for the full breakdown.

Getting There

Most guests fly into Kisoro airstrip, around 1 hour from Nkuringo, or transfer by road from other Bwindi sectors. We arrange all transfers as part of every package.
