Ruhija Gorilla Safari Lodge

A mid-to-luxury property in Bwindi’s Ruhija sector. Perched above the forest with three distinct room tiers, it’s built for travelers who want genuine comfort without a full luxury price tag.

Overview

Ruhija Gorilla Safari Lodge sits on a ridge above Bwindi’s highest-altitude sector, close enough to the park boundary that the forest canopy is the view from most rooms. The lodge offers three room categories — deluxe cabins, superior cabins, and standard rooms — which makes it one of the more flexible properties in the sector for groups traveling on mixed budgets, since a family or group of friends can book different tiers under one roof rather than splitting across separate lodges.

Ruhija’s altitude (the highest of Bwindi’s four sectors) means noticeably cooler nights than Rushaga or Buhoma, and the lodge’s design leans into that with fireplaces or heaters in the higher room tiers. It’s a practical choice for guests combining gorilla trekking with birding, since Ruhija’s Mubwindi Swamp trail is one of East Africa’s best birding walks and the lodge sits within easy reach of it.

Because it offers three price tiers, we’d suggest booking this property when your travel party has mixed preferences — a couple wanting a deluxe cabin and a friend on a tighter budget in a standard room, for instance, without having to split the group across separate lodges. As with any Ruhija property, book 3–6 months ahead for peak season (June–September, December–February) and you’ll have your pick of room tiers; last-minute bookings in this sector are more forgiving than in Rushaga, but the deluxe cabins go first.

Rooms & Amenities

Deluxe Cabins

The top tier, typically with the best forest-facing views and private outdoor sitting areas — the natural choice if you’re prioritizing comfort after a demanding trek day.

Superior Cabins

A step down in size and view but still en-suite and comfortably furnished, generally the best value tier at this property.

Standard Rooms

The most affordable option on-site, suited to travelers prioritizing the permit and the location over room size.

Dining & Common Areas

A shared dining and lounge area with forest views, typically running a set-menu dinner service timed around trek departures.

Getting There

Ruhija sector is reached by road from Buhoma (roughly 1.5 hours) or via a longer overland route through the park from the south. The lodge sits close to Ruhija’s park headquarters and the Uganda Wildlife Authority offices, which keeps the morning transfer on trek day short compared with lodges further out.

We arrange this transfer directly as part of your itinerary, whether you’re arriving from Entebbe, from another Bwindi sector, or combining Ruhija with a Queen Elizabeth National Park extension to the north.

A Trek Morning From Here

A trek morning from a Ruhija lodge starts early — typically a 5:30–6:00 AM wake-up, since Ruhija’s park headquarters briefing usually begins around 7:00 AM and the transfer from most lodges in the sector runs anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes depending on exactly where the lodge sits. After registration and the ranger briefing, you’ll be assigned a family based on where trackers located them earlier that morning — Ruhija’s families range across some of the park’s steepest, most heavily forested terrain, so trek times here can run longer than in gentler sectors like Buhoma. Cooler morning temperatures at this altitude mean a warm layer over your trekking clothes is genuinely useful before the walk warms you up.

How It Compares to Other Ruhija Options

Ruhija Gorilla Safari Lodge sits above Bakiga Lodge and Bwindi Panorama Nature Resort on comfort, thanks to its deluxe cabin tier, while still offering a standard-room option for travelers on a tighter budget. If you want the sector’s most flexible pricing under one roof, this is generally the strongest pick; if a specific view or eco-focus matters more to you than tiered pricing, Agandi Lodge or Cuckooland Tented Lodge are worth comparing.

Booking Ruhija Gorilla Safari Lodge Through Us

Ruhija sees fewer visitors than Rushaga or Buhoma, which means lodges here — including this one — often have more room availability on shorter notice, even in peak season. We book it directly as part of your habituation or trekking itinerary, bundled with your permit and transfers rather than as a separate reservation you’d have to coordinate yourself.

Ruhija is Bwindi’s highest-altitude sector, known for cooler weather, some of the park’s best birding, and the Mubwindi Swamp trail. See our full Ruhija Sector guide for gorilla families, trail difficulty, and what else to do nearby.
