Bakiga Lodge sits on a steep, terraced hillside in Ruhija, on the eastern edge of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, close to the briefing point for Ruhija’s gorilla treks. It is run by the Bakiga Community Project, a charity, and all of the lodge’s profits go to the project’s community development work.
That work is mainly water. The project builds protected springs and community water tanks so that rural families can reach clean water, and says it has helped well over 200,000 people so far.
The lodge itself is built to tread lightly. Water comes from rain-harvesting tanks, power comes from solar panels with no generators, plastic bottles are collected for recycling and the slopes have been terraced and planted to prevent erosion.
Good to know: the grounds are steep, and Ruhija is cool at night. Bring a warm layer and sturdy shoes.
Rooms are timber cabins with en-suite bathrooms and private balconies. Room types range from single, double and twin rooms to triple rooms and more spacious deluxe cabins with upgraded furniture and larger balconies.
Stays are on a full-board basis with complimentary tea and coffee. Because water is rain-harvested, guests are asked to use it carefully.
