Rushaga Sector

Bwindi’s southernmost sector — and the only place in Uganda offering the Gorilla Habituation Experience.

Overview

Rushaga sits in the far south of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, close to the Rwandan border, and holds more habituated gorilla families than any other sector — including the two currently open to the Gorilla Habituation Experience.

The terrain here is steep and demanding even by Bwindi standards, but the payoff is real: fewer crowds than the northern Buhoma sector, and the only habituation permits in the country.

Experiences Near Rushaga

A habituation day is the centerpiece — here’s how guests fill the days around it.

Batwa Cultural Trail

A guided walk led by local Batwa community members covering traditional forest skills, storytelling and music — usually a half-day, arranged the day before or after your trek.

Lake Mutanda Canoe Excursion

A scenic crater lake roughly 1–1.5 hours from Rushaga by road, with dugout-style canoe trips between small islands. A relaxed counterpoint to trek days.

Community Coffee Cooperative Visit

A bean-to-cup tour of a Bwindi-area coffee cooperative, with a chance to roast and taste coffee grown on the park’s edge.

A Second Trek, Different Family

Pair your habituation day with a standard one-hour trek to Nshongi or Mishaya group — both fully habituated and based in Rushaga.

Mgahinga Volcano Day Trip

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, near Kisoro, is a few hours from Rushaga and offers golden monkey trekking and Virunga volcano hikes as an add-on.

Birding the Southern Forest Trails

Bwindi is a recognized Important Bird Area with several hundred recorded species; local guides run dedicated birding walks separate from gorilla trekking.

Best Time to Trek in Rushaga

June–September and December–February are the driest windows and the most popular for habituation permits, which sell out furthest in advance for these months. The rainy seasons (March–May, October–November) bring muddier, more strenuous trails but noticeably easier permit availability — a real trade-off worth weighing if your dates are flexible. See our full Best Time of Year for Bwindi guide for a month-by-month breakdown.

Getting There

Most guests fly into Kihihi or Kisoro airstrip and transfer by road, or drive the full route from Entebbe (roughly 9–10 hours). We handle all transfers as part of every package.
